Daily memories of home that make me smile

There are a lot of good things about being here but I do miss my friends and family. I keep some things around the house that always make me think fondly of them. I’ve already mentioned my fabulous pictures that I bought from Alex as a moving present to myself.

Baubles Sofa

Every single day I see these they make me smile. I also love the plate that Annabel made and painted and gave me for Christmas. I hope she won’t mind that I use it to prop spoons on when I’m cooking.

Another favourite is the wonderful Japanese Mobile given to me by Catherine. This sits on my kitchen windowsill and dances in imperceptable breezes. I gave a similar mobile to Catherine several years ago. What I love so much about my one is that she has enjoyed hers so much she gave me one too.

Dinner in Venice

Last night I had dinner in Venice. Or more specifically in the Venitian hotel as I’m still in Vegas. The restaurant was Italian bistro style, set under a beautiful blue sky with light fluffy clouds in a cobbled square, lined with shops and full of performers and people strolling around. There was even a canal complete with gondolas. The crazy thing was that this was INDOORS. Even weirder it was UPSTAIRS above the casino floor. (Who puts canals upstairs? I told you this place was crazy).

It was great though – fantastic Italian food including one of my favourites – arancini di riso, good wine and all far away from all the bling and wildly coloured casino carpets that make your head spin. And even though this was all indoors, the clever lighting (Ok and the fact that the sky was painted on the ceiling) made it feel like it was outdoors.

Made me laugh…

At first I thought this was an example of New World subtlety – but on further investigation this stuff is from France.

At last a French wine minus the ponce factor. Will let you know what it tastes like.

There’s a Chardonney but I’ve got my eye on the Shiraz first…

Nature’s warning signs

Nature has ways of giving warnings that something is dangerous to eat – just think of all those spotted toadstools.

The cunning chaps in America have come up with a similar system for fast food. Essentially those places that have food that is either toxic or generally not fit for human consumption are marked by the use of a red or yellow sign. Red AND yellow signs signify a particular high risk of encountering dreadful food.

“Can I have some moon rocks please?”

We’ve been putting pictures up. Inevitably there’s the odd hole that needs filling so off to Home Depot I went to buy some Polyfiller. No luck finding it so I asked. The conversation went something like this:

“Hello, I’m looking for Polyfiller.”

“Grunt. Eh? What’s that?”

“It’s what you use to fill small holes in walls.”

“You want a drill? They’re in Aisle 14”

“No I’ve drilled a hole in a wall in the wrong place. Now I want to fill it.”

Blank Stare. Then sound of penny dropping. He hands me something.

“That’s almost right but that’s for filling metal….”

(Go to beginning of conversation and repeat several times)

Needless to say we never gor there but I eventually found it myself. You’d have thought I just asked for moon rocks.

Turns out the stuff is called Spackle here. Who knew that?

My stuff finally arrived

My stuff arrived – it is great to be reunited with it all but most exciting is that my pictures arrived. I bought myself a moving present of two paintings from the fabulously talented Alex Baraitser. They are just perfect.

My first visitor

My father has just come to visit – and it is GREAT to have him here. I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time in Home Depot and those sorts of awful places – somehow having someone to share the experience makes it fun. Dad in Home Depot

Ever tried to get an unconscious fat man into a wetsuit?

Back to Ikea to pick up the mattress for the sofa bed in spare room and a missing thingumy  for the other bed. I totally underestimated size of mattress so spent 25 mins wrestling the thing into the back of the car.

Imagine trying to get an unconscious fat man into a wet suit and you’ll have an idea of the challenge involved. So thrilled with eventual success of getting it into car that left the mystery bed bit behind. Aaaargh.
